Having lived in Kernville years ago I've driven this canyon many times, but more as a commuter route than to actually have fun. If you had this road to yourself it would be absolutely amazing, nothing but curves and hairpins climbing up to Lake Isabella. Unfortunately, this road carries a high volume of vehicles including the occasional tractor-trailer and a whole line of RV's and boat trailers on summer weekends.

Caltrans has been working on this road for years to make it safer, widening narrow corners and adding passing lanes where possible. Still, there are plenty of places to have some fun if you are willing to risk the traffic congestion. Not a road to make a destination of but one that can be enjoyable if you happen to be in the area.
