I found out about Box Canyon when someone emailed me the suggestion through this site. It so happened that about 2 weeks later I met some friends in the area for an afternoon motorcycle ride and was able to test it on the way up. While on the map it looks quite promising, although short (2.7 miles), the reality of the situation isn't quite so promising.

I happened to hit the road from the south, and in the northbound direction the road is all uphill except the very last few curves that drop down to Santa Susana Pass Rd. This was fine by me; I usually prefer riding uphill on new roads as fighting gravity gives you that much more of a safety margin when you need to stop in a hurry.

My biggest complaint with this road wasn't the condition of the pavement, which wasn't very good but I've seen plenty worse, but the amount of houses and driveways. While we're not talking Orange County congestion here, there are far too many houses and driveways to really enjoy this road. Especially when you consider that most of those driveways are hidden around blind corners, if somebody is backing out of their house you won't have much time to react.

While not exactly a waste of time, Santa Susana makes for a much better drive if you find yourself in the area.

Red: Santa Susana Pass Rd.
Blue: Box Canyon Rd.

Looks good on the map but ...
... it's getting a bit crowded down there.
